Plain scone recipe.
I'm having a tea party next Sunday and planning do bake my own scones to serve with jam and clotted cream.I had a trial run today with a recipe from the internet but they were a disaster!Any fool proof recipes please!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Ok katy!.............try this one, always works for me!...........8ozs self raising flour, 2ozs hard margarine, 1 teaspoon baking powder, rub together until resemble breadcrumbs, add milk until the mix just about binds together, not too much milk, get your had to bind it!.............cut out into the size you like, I prefer to use a smallish cutter, so that they cook and rise quickly, bake over half way up a hot oven, around 220c, remove from oven when slightly golden and cool on a rack!.........good luck!......

sorry!...............forgot the sugar!...........watching TV at the same time!............I add about 1oz of sugar, but if you like more sweetness then you can add 2ozs!.........and yes, if liked you can add a milk wash too, I personally don't, I like to brush with a little water after cooking and sprinkle on some sugar!...............sorry about that!.........

I tried the BBc jane Hornby recipe and thoroughly recommend it-no egg just milk and I used some bottled lemon juice. Don`t work too hard when mixed and dip cutter in flour to cut out nice and thickly. The tip with placing on a tray previously hotted up in the oven worked well. I used milk to brush over but you can use beaten egg if you have some.
