I remember a while back when I was a guide leader and we ran a veg stall at the church bazaar. We had two unopened sacks of potatoes left over, which one of the mums took round to the Sally Army hostel - she was turned away saying they only took tinned and frozen goods these days. So the next week we had a combined Scout and Guide potato bake out to use up as many spuds as we could, and then the youngsters took the rest home to their mums.
when I was at primary, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, we were asked for non perishable donations, but, those of us whose mums and dads (well dads then) had gardens or allotments were also encouraged to bring fruit, veg and flowers to decorate the church.
asking for money is a bit much though, although I do remember that the school used to "guide" us in what was appropriate in ther food line eg "now do we really think that the old people will enjoy a big slab of toffee??"
