Is there anyway I can find out an acquantance surname?
We are trying to organise a surprise but unable to as the surname is unknown.
We know the address & more-or-less everything else apart from the surname.
I would like to find them on facebook if poss?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Assuming that the person is on the electoral roll (as they should be if they're of voting age and eligible to vote in UK elections), simply call at the relevant local council office to inspect the roll. (You might also find it available at your local Post Office or library). It's a public document and (unlike the 'edited' version available to junk mailers) the printed version will list every voter in the area.
The full (printed) electoral roll is in alphabetical street order, and then in numerical house order, so it should only take a few seconds to find the address which you're looking for.

While 192.com might be worth a try, there are two problems with it:
1. 192.com is based upon the edited electoral roll, so anyone who marks their electoral registration form, to indicate that they don't want to be included on the edited roll, won't appear there. (The majority of people now get their details excluded from the edited roll)
2. 192.com tends to want lots of money just to get a sinlgle piece of information.
