Robin hood is not from Nottingham.
how do you know that
They got the arrows wrong - typical shoddy worksop-manship
Robin Hood was from Sherwood Forest - which occupied most of the area between Doncaster and Nottingham
have they got a statue of Robin Hood at the airport ?, they have a lovely bronze statue of John Wayne at the US John Wayne airport.
No, there is no statue of Robin Hood at the airport. Mind you, the whole airport is about the size of my kitchen.
Think of Robin Hood, Has a Jesus Christ type character..........out of every little mole hill, a mountain was created. Lots of nonsense has been written about him.
Was he not known has ...Robin of Loxley?

Loxley is not in Nottingham.
From: http://en.wikipedia.o...heffield#Airport_name

It was named 'Robin Hood' based on the following local information:

1) The original Robin Hood legends are set in Barnsdale Forest, the area of South Yorkshire which surrounded Doncaster and Pontefract. This legend is reinforced by the fact that the now closed village pub in nearby Hatfield Woodhouse is known as the Robin Hood and Little John.

2) The airport has a historical connection to Nottinghamshire (as the parish of Finningley was, until 1974 and the Local Government Act 1972, administered as part of Nottinghamshire) and still resides in the boundary of the Diocese of Nottingham.

3) The runway extension (completed in 1957) to accommodate Vulcan bombers, extended the airfield into the county of Nottinghamshire.

4) Some later Robin Hood legends - and the popular 20th century books, films and TV programmes are set in Sherwood Forest.

5) The Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster is closer to what is left of Sherwood Forest than the city of Nottingham is.

6) The forests of Sherwood and Barnsdale merged in this area of Yorkshire.

7) The name would provide an identity which would raise a lot of attention (if a little controversy) for the airport and create a marketing opportunity.
Did you know that when Robin was dying he sent for his trusty right hand man Little John & said to him 'Bring me my bow & I will fire an arrow & wherever it should land that is where I wish to be buried' and that is why they buried him in the ceiling.Ron.
How do you bury someone in a ceiling?
Robin Hood was also known as Robin of Loxley.
Loxley is a village on the edge of Sheffield (with a lovely pub, where I was best man at my friend's wedding reception)
Robin Hood Airport is the Doncaster-Sheffield airport, so the name's not so illogical really!

OK, I admit it. I still think that it's a poor choice of name. Given the proximity of the airport to Doncaster (as it's nowhere near to Sheffield!) it could have been the Benjamin Huntsman Airport:

the Roy Clarke Airport or even the Jeremy Clarkson Airport ;-)

Chris
Why is an airport needed at all in that part of The Frozen North?

"Why is an airport needed at all in that part of The Frozen North?"

To keep the people of Sheffield away from Oliver Letwin, of course!

Ha Haaaaa!!

I never thought of that, Chris. In fact I'd forgotten all about Mr Leftwing entirely. Thanks for reminding me.
