Almost on a nightly basis i find myself waking up to see strange people in my bedroom or hearing somebody talking in the hall outside.
Obviously after a few minutes I realise that I was imagining it, but I still feel very uneasy and find it hard to go back to sleep. The figures that I see are usually old people standing right next to me or at the foot of the bad staring at me.

My question is What is this? I looked up night terrors which seems to be different. This problem is seriously affecting my sleep pattern. Is there a cure or something?

I have not had any stressful experiences recently . It just started.

Does this happen every night? at the same time? Are you sure you are not thinking about something?
Is yours an old house, mungbeanz?
Could be a form of sleep paralysis. Below from wiki.

In addition, the paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger.[9] Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.[8] The hallucinatory element to sleep paralysis makes it even more likely that someone will interpret the experience as a dream, since completely fanciful or dream-like objects may appear in the room alongside one's normal vision. Some scientists have proposed this condition as an explanation for alien abductions and ghostly encounters
I have had this a number of years mungbeanz. Same thing, seeing people, children, old people looking at me, sitting by the bed or walking around etc. I have learnt to live with it although my partner does suffer as sometimes I shout and scream scareing him half to death. I believe it is quite common. Maybe episodes are more common if you are stressed or upset by anything.

I can go a week with nothing then all of a sudden I get them in quick successions.

scotman: it usually happens about 2 hours after i fall asleep the first time

I live in an appartment in the city centre, so not an old house.

Apparently I do sometimes talk to the 'apparitions'

I don't think it's sleep paralysis as mostly I sit up and turn the light on during the experience.
is your room well ventilated! try changing the room, sleep on the couch for a change! leave a night light on .. leave light music on ! usually its the silence and darkness that adds to your fear!

also, ask a friend to stay over to see if he experiences the same thing!
