Castrated Male Dog Mating.
11 Answers
A few days ago one of my dogs who had been castrated about five years ago made a serious attempt to "couple" with a bitch whose owner claimed to have recently been in season. But the relevant parts of the bitch appeared to be quite swollen as if she may still have been "receptive"? Nothing substantive obviously happened but he was definitely "having a go".
Does anyone else have experience of this between dogs? Why would my castrated dog still feel the "urge"? Any (sensible) replies welcome.

I understand that its more common in dogs who are neutered late and even more common in dogs who have had sexual experience. It seems to be something to do with how hardwired the knowledge is.
In human males, adult men who have had their testicles removed can still be capable of normal performance without hormonal support. The key there, from research done on soldiers in the world wars, seems to be self belief so maybe its the same for dogs?
