long division with decimal points impossible

a nightmare! if the number you are dividing by is wholo-not so bad but if it is 3.4? What is this chunking method?

did you not see my other answer? You get rid of the decimal points by moving the point to the right on both figures the same number of times until the point is gone
eg 100 divided by 3.4 is 1000 divided by 34

100.4 divided by 3.5 is the same as 1004 divided by 35; just move the decimal place 1 to the right in both terms

Similarly:

100.4/3.55 = 10040/355 (move decimal point two places)
100.435/3.55 = 10043.5/355

etc.

Isn't it a nightmare when you can't do your kids homework.....? Suggest you search for 'chunking method' on YouTube. Our kids also used 'bus stop method'. Good luck!

Multiply the divisor by 10 so it becomes 34. Also multiply the divided by 10 to preserve the balance. In other words, 480/3.4 is the same as 4800/34

That's how I was taught to multiply/ or divide by powers and it caused no problems for me, but throughout my training as a maths teacher I was told that I must never teach that method. Instead, we were instructed, we had to move the digits. But that seems cumbersome for some pupils so I too fall back on the old ways.
