Kindle.

Evening folks. OH has shown interest in buying Kindle. Anybody out there with experience of this piece of kit, pros and cons etc. Any tips/advice much appreciated.

I have one too. I like it a lot more than I thought. I still like my books, but this is so convenient and practical. I took it away on holiday, no bulky book in my hand luggage, long battery life, easy to hold whilst reading in all positions.
I would recommend buying the case with a light in. Expensive but so worth it. Protects the kindle and the light is great for night reading.

Oh and buy the 3G model. You can download a book anywhere in Europe at no cost.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!! I said I would never give up on books, worked in a library for years and encouraged people to read more. Get a Duragadget (£10ish) cover as proper Kindle covers are expensive, you don't need a light if you have a bedside lamp! If he buys it on his on credit card it links any books bought to his own account and can buy books with 'One Click' and downloads in seconds. Books are very cheap and often free and it holds thousands of them. You don't really need 3G, just load books before you go abroad. In the future I can see them having colour pictures as well! Get one yourself too! Wish I had shares in it!

I love my 3G kindle especially since I can adjust the font. However I still buy the odd book and use my local library as I enjoy browsing.

have had mine well over a year can sit on the beach in direct sunlight with no probs one of the best things my OH has bought me, he got me the 3G one

I have the 3G one, had it since just after christmas, and I love it. many books on Amazon are free and titles change regulary so it pays to look in once a week at least. I have over 400 books on mine now and have sorted them into categories for easy searching. I would definately say buy one!!

We have 3 in the house - one each!

Mrs V has read more books than ever, and we don't have them sitting on the bookshelf afterwards!n Great for reading in bed at night when she can't sleep - she has a little light, so I can snore away happily!

Daughter V is doing an MA in Creative Writing, and has books on her Kindle, good for when she's travelling.

I found it a bit odd at first - you only see about 2 or 3 paragraphs at a time, but I'm getting used to it now.

Kindle book torrents can be downloaded - there are thousands of titles - a pal has 6500 and counting!

One downside is lack of colour for graphics, but there is a PC version of Kindle reader if there are lots of pictures.

I have been downloading on torrent too but didn't want to draw attention to it as I cheat a bit......lol. you can also buy discs off ebay for a few pounds with thousands of books to choose from too.

I have one read about 6 books on it my wife about ten. We haven't turned it for about 2 months. I bought it because I thought ne books would be cheaper and they aren't. Also some books I wanted were not available for it. So I ahd to buy them in book form anyway.

Its a matter of preferance, but I missed the feel of a book, so we have both gone back to books and the kindle, like so many gadgets, is now gathering dust.

Yes, Daniela, I think Amazon are looking at it like downloaded music - not possible to control, but getting sales on new books.

We've certainly spent plenty!

I've spent a bit on Amazon too and have a few on my 'wish list' if anyone close to me looks in ;-)
but I like the classics also and books I havn't read for years that I'm enjoying reading again without the old musty smell that you get with older books. I even have the Bible on mine.
