The thing I find confusing is that she was supposed to be a recognised great beauty but in the photos I have seen she looks like she's been smacked in the face by a shovel

Constance Markiewicz might not have been a great beauty but she is regarded as a great woman and a heroine of the fight for freedom from British rule. Condemned to death for her part in the Easter Rising she was reprieved and after serving time in prison she became the first women elected to the House of Commons (not Nancy Astor) though she never took her seat due to republican policy. She also was the only women to hold a cabinet post in the government of the Republic of Ireland untill 1979
