The last time this happened this caused quite a problem and as I have family flying to Tenerife for a week on tuesday I need to keep an eye on this. What's the possibility that they may end up not flying or being stuck in Tenerife? Is there anywhere else I can gain more knowledge about exactly whats happening and how this eruption compares to the last?

last i read was that it may effect scotland tues and then spread down rest of UK with thursday.
My mum and dad are due to fly back from US (landing weds morn) so, like you, I am trying to keep optimistic that they can fly and wont get stuck there.

Thanks for the reply. I guess all we can do is sit with our fingers crossed and watch the news and the skies.
The Ash Cloud may reach Scotland later in the week depending on wind direction.
The Airline will not fly if there is any danger !
http://www.ft.com/cms...c0.html#axzz1NABYZPPD sorry, spain by thursday is what i read. The airlines, following last years ash clouds, did run many tests on engines etc so perhaps there will be more flights this time around if safe.
I was hoping to make a break for warmer climes this week too!

Considering how blustery it is out there, the wind may keep the problem away from us.

But yes, fingers crossed eh?

Redcrx I saw the the documentary about aircraft going down and they did one about the plane that flew after another eruption and it damaged the windows and engine and the plane was very lucky it didn't come down. I don't think no airline would risk it and would be very uncomfortable if I was up in a plane and new that the air harboured ash.
I heard on the news last night that the ash from this eruption is not the same type as the last eruption and is not expected to cause as much disruption, similar to the types of snow that delay trains and the leaves on the line idea I guess

Well l'm sure that the Airlines would have run many tests as said by redcrx but what happens if after a while of spewing the wrong type of ash to bring down a plane it starts to spew exactly the right type to disable airplane engines? A day the passengers and the airline never forgets is my guess.
It is not the same volcano erupting.

thank you, have passed it on to parents
Looks like Obama`s taking no chances. He`s coming here early to beat the ash cloud.
After last time, the airlines have said they learned a lot and will test for dust when planes fly - it will only be if there is a real danger that planes will be grounded. Many people felt after the event that they had been overcautious in grounding all the fleet, last time.

Another update and it's not looking good.

Look on the bright side. At least this one has a pronouncable name. Although guaranteed those poor newsreaders will have to refer back to the unpronouncable one. Here's hoping that the right kind of ash ends up in the sea and does not muck up everyone's travel arrangements.
