With so much information its hard to know where to start !?

you could always try looking in the recycle bin for starters

purely out of interest, how do you search Google for a file you think you may have deleted that may or may not be an .exe file ?

just wondering like

hi
its not the in recycle bin
Im getting this message when i try to open/run programes

"File Type: Executable File

File Extension: .exe

Description: A Windows Executable file is a program / application that runs on Windows. You may search the following Web site for related software and information"

Thanks
Is this only happening when you try to open files from icons on your desktop ?

try opening one of the programmes from its exe file from its folder where it is installed in program files.

also try going into task manager and under file > new task > type in explorer.exe and hit return, then on your desktop see if any programs open

ok i have tryed both things and both times the same box comes up with

"Choose the program you want to use to open this file: "
File explorer.exe
Ok sounds like its lost its file association for .exe files
What OS are you using XP Viista, 7, linux ?

Windows XP
It's clearly a registry problem, so the simplest way to deal with it would be to try running System Restore in Safe Mode;

Restart the computer, pressing F8 during the boot process. Your screen will look very odd (because the video driver won't have loaded) but you can then try following this path: Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

If you can get System Restore to run, you can reset your computer's registry to a date before the problem arose.
