I have managed to possibly solve all the clues bar 3.
1 Confused hilltops led to a French version (8)
2 Silent special agent, we hear (9)
3 Stockings for the driver (8) - I wonder if it is Balmoral

3 Think Balmoral could be the answer. You can get Balmoral stockings and a Balmoral could be a bonnet - link to driver? I had thought of Stirling (Stirling Moss) but couldn't see the link to stockings.
