sandy, was it unusual for your fathers generation to be so well educated ?
Both my parents would have been 100 last year. My father once commented how much the world had changed in his lifetime - when he was a lad, there were three cars in his local area, and he knew which one was coming by the sound of its engine.

Anne, his people were fairly well off. But we, his children, were all born on the wrong side of the blanket, so it was different for us.

It was always "quipped" that for finals in Medicine and Surgery at Trinity Dublin, the examiner would say "Come on to the pub for a drink and i will ask you some questions".....LOL
Sandyroe did he learn Latin?
My dad did but he was taught by the Jesuits in Manchester and Bradford
I think everyone should learn Latin its the language of saints and scholars

Nothing wrong with a viva voce over a Powers or two. :-)
My daughter went to TCD. I don't know how much work she did but she had a great time.
To be fair, she came out with a good degree.

Sqad, do you remember one of the Carry on Doctor films? A student couldn't pass his medical finals so he went to Ireland and bought a degree from a chap sitting in a jaunting car.
Oh I don't have a word of Latin - I recognise bits from mass
But I do have a series of learn to speak Latin CDs that I aim to use when I retire

But I was at Med School with a guy who was in the Iranian Army and he was given a fairly substantial grant as long as he was a student.
sandy....is St Vincent's in Dublin still open?
