Looking up an ancestor for a friend in the 1911 census, his job title is entered as a Chaffenter or Chappenter. At first I thought he couldn't spell Carpenter, but in the 1901 census he is a Foreman in a Granary so I wondered if it was something to do with separating wheat from chaff on a machine.

Has anyone heard of this?

lol carole in the 1911 census one lady gave her relationship to the head of the house as 'Mistress'................

A neighbour of one ancestor was Caleb Blott - ratcatcher. In a later census he was a mole catcher - he must have caught all the rats!!
