Help with short story please guys!!

Im currently trying to right a novel for a writing class and i just need some help in the direction! Rough outline to the story -

Couple been together for a long time - childhood sweethearts in fact- never been with anyone else - been trying for a baby for 18 months - found out they can't have children recently - still in love but going through a really tough time - not getting along lately - not sure where to go from here.

Girl in couple starts to develop feelings for younger guy friend - not sure if its because of the strain on current relationship or if she is really falling for him - nothing happens but feels get stronger - he is going to America travelling he wants her to go with him.

Which end to the story would you rather read? - Does she realise she cant live without her boyfriend and they get engaged or do and her boyfriend split up and goes to America?

All will be more intense and dramatised etc! I just don't know which way to go! What ending to the book would you guys rather read?

Not so helpful all of you! Its not just happy go lucky predictable love story - its really hard and sad reading about them trying to conceive for so long and falling for someone when you've only even known one thing! Basically your telling me it sounds boring! Bit late really im almost done apart from the end!! Thanks Paul that was more helpful!

incidentally... don't try to cram too much into a short story. You're already halfway to having enough plot for a novel.

write the ending that you get most enjoyment out of! why force yourself to write to keep the reader happy

Firstly well done in writing a novel, it's not an easy task as I am a writer of children's books, after years only now ready for representation! (anyway)

I think your story is one that will hit home with a lot of people, mostly women as this is probably your target audience. I think the days of a happy conventional ending are over. Personally I think she should end up on her own, having ruined two chances, but this is the lesson she is learning in life?

I just think that the message should be, less about 'being' with a man but more 'being happy' with yourself!

Well i was thinking i could end up writing a novel out of it as its something ive always wanted to do hence the writing classes! I can shorten it for class and bulk it up if it goes down well! Thanks Pinkypie thats encouraging - i was thinking of also venturing into childrens books but one thing at a time for me i think!!

She falls pregnant by the younger guy but decides to stay with b/f and pretend the baby is his - but he has secretly gone for tests and finds out he is sterile. Knows she must've cheated and leaves her a single mum with neither guy.
