Coens as Auteurs

Can the Coen brothers be argued as Auteurs despite the fact that there are two of them?

Strictly speaking an auteur is just a film director and there can be no arguement that both Joel and Ethan are film directors despite the fact that Joel gets the credit for directing most of their films. One would have to suggest that each is an auteur in his own right. If one considers the fuller meaning of the word 'auteur' to be a film director especially one having a dominant creative role, then they would still both qualify but Joel would probably be considered to be the more successful of the two.
