I have collar length very dark brown hair, which is now (after ages and ages of growing it) all one length - but it's looking lank and uninteresting ....... need ideas on what to do with it ...... could I get it lightened to a mid brown with some golden/honey highlights? How should I get it cut so it has a style without losing all the length? Difficult questions I know, when you can't see it, but need some inspiration or websites to ponder over!

yep golden, honey highlights and a few layers.
long layers though and the big thing this season is fringes
but start with a light fringe that could easily be grown out if you dont like it. Or how about some loose curls
Have your hair cut so it is shorter at the back, in layers at the bottom, sides sloping down to the front hair, and longer at the sides to the front (an old Vidal Sassoon/Mary Quant 1960s look), it will look good on thick hair, make it swingy, great with a fringe too. Also highlights will give it some depth. Make sure you go to a recommended hairdresser for the cut and the colour ... and not a junior trainee as this would be cheaper (but you may be disappointed with the cut), its worth paying for a senior qualified stylist. I wouldn't recommend a hairdressing school or Academy for cutting either ...
long layers will give move volume & movement
