Receiving calls whilst on the internet

I have only one phone line at home and spend a lot of time on the internet. I constantly worry that important calls are being missed. Is there some kind of software or device that can alert me if someone is trying to get though? I have just subscribed to BT's net chat which claims to solve the problem, but when I test it with my mobile phone I sometimes still get the engaged tone.

If you have an ADSL line installed you can surf the internet while speaking on the telephone. Alternvatively, i use AOL and it knocks me off the internet when an incoming call comes in. You could try using AOL if you don't mind being disconnected from the internet.
why don't you sign up to BT's 1571 service? It's completely free and answers calls for you when you're out, on the net or on the phone to someone else.
