When I open Word I am not seeing the full page but the cursor flashing at the top. I seem to have lost the header and footer area. If I open headers and footers the page miraculously returns to full page. How do I get word to open up in  full page mode?

This is easily sorted.  Do the following:

Open Word
Under the View menu choose 'Print Layout'
Under the Format menu choose 'Font . . .'
At the bottom of the dialogue window, click on 'Default'
Close Word

Next time you open it, it should be in your preferred viewing mode.

If you are using Word XP or Word 2003 you may already be in print layout, but have switched off the white space between page breaks.

Go to Tools > Options > View and make sure that you have the option for White space between pages ticked.

Could also be the page layout - if you go to VIEW, it may be on Normal, if you alter this to page layout, should come back.
If you go into View and then print layout, right at the top of the page, after the white bit, is a grey area, if you put your mouse curser over the grey area, it will turn to two arrows pointing away from each other, click the mouse and this will open up the white space again.
