Does anyone know whether the numbers and letters making up the N.I. No. contain any information. Can anyone tell your age from your National Insurance No.?

The two letter prefix can usually establish the date of issue of the NINO and the six digits are allocated sequentially.
Since most people are assigned their NINO as children as part of the Child Benefit payment system there is often a direct correlation between your prefix and your birthdate.

it is possible to kind of tell ages from ninos. ninos allocated in the 70's generally start with an N. 1970 is NW. in the 1990s they started generally with a J. its a bit of a rough and ready reckoner i know ,but sorry. i work with them every day. people who are not born as british citizens usually have them starting with a SE, SC or PW or PC (pre 2000). if you have been to a jobcentre and have been given one by them starting with a TN, this is a temporary number and only works in jobcentre related situations and not for tax purposes.
