What is a postmaster or sub post master?

I need to get copies of passport, driving license etc, certified by someone, and in the list it includes it can be certified by a post master or sub post master* (does not include chartered surveyors regulated by the RICS. So what is a post master or sub post master, is it strictly to do with post as in letters, the star after it with that info about surveyors has confused me a bit though, is it like a group of jobs or what?

A postmaster is someone in charge of a main (as in city or town) post office. A sub postmaster is someone in charge of a small (village or rural) post office - take your form in with your photos, and they will sign phots and form to confirm that they are a likeness of you.

It doesn't have to be one of those - a doctor, head teacher, bank manager - anyone with a similar position of authority will do.

andy hughes is right as ever, but just to say that I live in a suburb of a 110k town and our post office (until it closed of course!) was a sub PO, so the master was a sub master.  Presumably the list also include doctor and lawyer?  What about teacher?  My dad used to verify passports.  I suggest just pop to your nearest post office.  What other options are there for finding a post master?  Good luck!

Whoever you choose does need to have known you for a few years. I'm a Librarian and can verify passports, but I have found out that they do ring you to check that you do really know the person.
