They are not to protect you, they are to protect the computer. Just do as rojash says, leave the power lead plugged into the computer (you can turn the switch off at the wall if it makes you feel better) and make sure you touch the casing of the computer to discharge any static in you before taking the card out the anti static bag it'll come in and putting it in the computer.
