I plan my week so that I don't use the car as much as I used to. It's a big car so I don't suppose it's that efficient and the price of diesel makes me want to cry - I never fill it to the top as it cost £90+.
I don't do many miles each week,
Take train to work and work from home.
Season ticket on train costs £4500 a year.
However we don't drink or smoke or gamble (other than stokes tips ), so my car is our luxury and I have not cut back on the miles we do. Still take trips to the coast most weekends for lunch (100 miles round trip).
I was thinking it was costing me a fortune even though I only live about 3 miles from work.... then I took it on a bit of a run out a few weeks back and realised I was getting about 15mpg from it..... Eeeeek! one quick clean up of the MAF sensor and it's much better now! (though still too damn expensive)
I think it is working out cheaper to send the kids to school on the bus and let them walk home than Dad's taxi service.Still taken them sometimes, but the fuel costs are just silly.
Yes, I know you are all talking about cars, but can I just say something here. A friend of mine at work had a Royal Enfield Bullet 500 motorbike, and he claimed this did 91 mpg, if he drove it carefully. Would this vehicle be of any use to you, if you have a motorbike licence, that is?
If I try and forget I am driving the Indianopolis 500 I can manage 42 mpg on a long run but most of the time its more like 30mpg. however my car is shocking on short runs so we are now using my ancient but very economical peugeot for short distances. (school runs, shopping etc) Twenty quid lasts for ages in comparison to the day to day cars.
We got a hire car last week while waiting for my OH company car (see my post in motoring!).
Currently showing as 29 MPG, which is pretty rubbish, especially compared to my 2ltr Megane that is at 34 MPG.
The hire car we have is likely to be going back tomorrow though as we want a replacement.... full tank did us less then 300 miles in the last week.. ouch!
I spend at least half as much again in comparison with this time last year to do the same miles!.......very annoying!.........my pension does not really run to this increase!......have to cut back on other things to cover it!.................
