thanks gen 2 i would have never worked that out for myself, we didn't do maths where i went to school the teacher used to put all the answers on the blackboard and go to sleep till the bell went for the end of the lesson honestly i am not joking.thanks again.

The correct answer should be 5.53.

i of course could have used a calculator but i don't know how to do that %thingy on them  i can add subtract and multiply on them but then i always think it may be the wrong answer and do not trust it ,i am a bit of a sad case really .thanks again.

Just for the record, here is how you would do it if your teacher had stayed awake for the lesson.

Let the original cholesterol level = X
since 100% means all of it, 100% of X  is X
a 15 % reduction leaves us with 85% of X which we know to be 4.7

85% of X = 4.7 can be rewritten as:
   (85 / 100)* X = 4.7

multiply both sides by 100
   85 * X = 100 * 4.7

divide both sides by 85
   X = (100 * 4.7) / 85

which simplifies to
   X = (20 * 4.7) / 17
     = 94/17
     = 5.53 (to 2 decimal places)

gen2 - no need to fret over a slight error in the second decimal place; cholesterol is only measured to one decimal place e.g. 5.5 mmol/L.

you have got to be joking! you lost me at (85/100*x=4.7 but thanks for trying . i once went on an education course in the army and the officer teaching maths had to give up on me as he did not have enough time left in the army to make me understand . but as i said thanks for trying.jacko.

jacko Percentages are just 1/100ths wi a posh name.

If you know the New amount (call it N) and want to know what an original amount was, take the reduction off 100 and call that answer, A. Divide N by A and muliply by 100.

In your example, N= 4.7 A=100-15= 85

the original amount is (N/A) x 100

or (4.7/85)  x 100 = 5.29
