diesel cars pros and cons

A dealer told me there's no point in buying a 2nd hand diesel unless I was doing around 15,000 miles per year. I only do half that. He said such a low mileage would not be good for the car. What do you think?

What a load of tat you've been told. I've had a c-max 1.8 diesel for 4 years, I only do about 7 or 8 thousand miles a year, brilliant engine, great mpg, smooth, quiet and as for carcinogens so is petrol, just don't get it on your skin, what are you doing that gets it on your skin anyways??? you use the pumps the same and in my opinion petrol smells stronger than diesel. My work colleagues have; 2 litre diesel Mondeo, 1.8 diesel focus, new 2 litre diesel Mondeo and 1.6 diesel fiesta, as for breaking down, well, mine hasn't, theirs haven't. Take one for a test drive and make your own mind up.

My neighbour's petrol car vibrates through the house when he starts it on his drive. His diesel van is positively silent in comparison, and less fumes.
To pass an MOT any vehicle has to get through the emissions test - petrol and diesel.

I'vegot a 2.8 Chrysler Grand Voyage that is both diesel and automatic (best car available at the time of purchase). It is a 55 plate and has done less than 60,000 miles and does less than 3000 miles a year and it is really quiet and doesn't smell.

I drive 20,000 plus miles a year and drive a bluemotion diesel VW Golf Estate 1.6 with an ave mpg of 67.3 - does a similar petrol vehicle do anywhere near that - methinks not

How can break even points be an issue ? Per set cost, diesel gets you so far, petrol some other distance. Miles per year won;t affect that.

And the idea that low mileage in itself is a factor is something I'd need some convincing about.

I don't believe there is much in the way of pros and cons. Pick a car you like and fill it with whatever it needs.

Amongst other things I'm a car dealer and there is no discernable better or worse between either a diesel or a petrol- I drive whatever I fancy driving at the time or is most convenient to and sometimes that is a petrol and sometimes it's a diesel- if you think diesels are embarassing Geezer then you want to drive the Mercedes diesel estate that's parked outside at the moment- gorgeous quiet luxury car, no smells, no noise, no drawbacks, fantastic fuel economy- did you last set foot outside in 1978?

Diesel can cause cancer. I'd advise anyone not to stand behind one of those belching lorries, buses or taxes that emit an obnoxious blue/black smoke.

why has nobody mentioned the DPF system on newer diesels - if you do constant short journeys then it is unlikely to regenerate itself ending in a costly failure (it is said)
