Since it's a traditional Irish song, the original composer is unknown. Several early, (and uncredited) recordings of this song exist, though Thin Lizzy's later and commercially released version is perhaps the best known.

Whiskey In The Jar was a traditional Irish folk song looooonnnnng before Thin Lizzy got their mitts on it. Difficult to pin down the first recording of it, as it is such an old song, but Thin Lizzy were the first to bring it to a mainstream, non-folk audience. It may well be the only song ever to be recorded by both The Dubliners and Metallica :-).
