What dastardly device has been historically used to hunt whales and/or crows?

a harpoon gun

The invention of the bomb-headed whaling harpoon by the Norwegians at the end of the 19th century spelled the death knell for the whale.  Don't know about crows, though.
A machine gun situated on the Severn Bridge
I've lived in the country for 50 years and I've never seen anybody hunting crows with a harpoon gun.
......not many whales in the country either.
