Salt & Weeds

We've got a lot of block paving front & back, looks nice when its all clean of weeds. My H spends a lot of time on it, he's always pulling weeds from it for them to return soon after. Used various weed killers and yes they kill the weeds but he's still got to get down & remove them. We've filled the cracks with sand but it blows away.
We were told by a new neighbour to fill the cracks with table salt, we've never heard this before, what about the cat? or birds for that matter I feel it could do more harm than good... anyone got any thoughts on this, or any tips on keeping the blo-dy weeds at bay?

salt works with a few weeds, but not many, try pathclear, works very well!........

Jem, the Romans used to salt the land of their enemies so that nothing would grow there, (wonder where they got such vast quantities of salt) so salt will stop any new growth. It will also kill slugs and snails. I don't think it will hurt the cat or the birds, because I do not think they will touch it. They have more sense.

Welshy is right, because I just realised if you put down salt the next lot of rain will wash it away. You need a really strong weedkiller, like pathclear to get right down to the roots.

Rain only helps the salt get to the root of the weed, so use it, and if it doesn`t work first time, use more the next time.

Thanks Carlton, Yep, will give it a go. What we want is a preventative really but thats asking the impossible I suppose. Oh well!

Use a 50- 50 mix of vinegar and washing up liquid in a hand spray,do it on a sunny day,the weeds will soon wilt

I just mix salt & water in a spray bottle & use as you would with a weedkiller. Ratio salt/water can be adjusted nothing scientific about it but it works & costs almost nothing
