sitting with your legs crossed

why is it so bad to always sit with your legs crossed?
Nurses throughout the years have always said ----unfold them legs!

It seems to be 'compulsory' for American men to cross their legs by resting one ankle on the opposite knee rather than folding one knee over the other. I imagine this has to do with the notion that their manhood would be squashed were they to do so by the latter method. In other words, it's boasting, really!
