Are there non phone devices that run apps?

Are there any devices that run the same apps that you can get for smartphones, other than smartphones themselves? Also nothing by Apple as I don't like the idea of the iphone/ipod etc.

samsung do the galazy tab. im sure it would run same apps that the galaxy mobile does

if you mean Apps in the generic sense then apps is just short for applications, the computer you are sitting at looking at this site is running an application to let you view the this page (Internet explorer, firefox... etc... they are all applications) so yes.... every computer runs apps as will every tablet or netbook.

If you mean apps as in the advert "there's an app for that" then that's an apple term for little programs (applications) that run on apple devices, so asking for something that runs the apple definition of apps but it can't be anything by apple is a non starter!

Chuck basically my son loves my wife's xperia phone and all the "apps" on it. We were thinking of getting him something that could run the apps but don't really want to get him a smartphone.

The xperia is an Android phone, so any android tablet with access to the android market place would do it...

A decent one will cost £300 plus though and cheap ones aren't worth getting!

A second hand android phone with wireless (like the xperia) and just don't put a SIM card into it would do it cheaper.

Didn't plan on spending too much as he's only 7 and will probably get bored of it in a couple of weeks. I assumes without the phone function it would be cheaper but I guess no. Might wait a while and see if the prices drop a little.
