I thought about trying meditation. Does anyone know anything about it? Do you have to sit crossed legged or in yoga positions? I'm a bit creaky for that. Does it make you sleep? Suggestions please (not too rude).

Thanks Micky. That was very informative. I enjoyed the talk immensely and the man's voice was almost hypnotic. I shall play it again a couple of times to get the real feel of it. I think it might do me some good.
I watched the beginning and I agree very hypnotic, I'll listen to this and the other four parts when i get some time as i am now intrigued.

I just tried the one for Beginners (No. 1 of course) and it was really good. I think I achieved a great deal of relaxation by the end of it. Thank you again.
thanx mm, just what i´ve been searching for for years.
No problem piggynose maybe you me and starbuckone can give each other reviews of these techniques and any others we come across on this thread.
I went to come classes once, a mixture of Qui Gong and meditation. I find it ridiculously hard to switch off, even during meditation although it did help me to learn how to focus on something more relaxing.

I was just sat comfortable, no ommmming or anything like that, just relaxed and learning to feel grounded and focus on relaxing things like my breathing or a relaxing vision.

I find it helps with stressful situations and getting relaxed to sleep and with a medical condition.

I can now do thngs like focus on my breathing and the tip of my nose to help calm myself and focus, I can help relax myself for sleep by imagining each part of my body relaxing bit by bit in waves and when I have the onset of dizziness/vertigo (clinical from ear disorder) I can help myself feel more grounded (feet flat on the floor and feeling attached, if that makes sense, breathing etc...) and focus.

I was also taught a technique to destress where to take a deep breath in through your mouth then hold and release slowly through your nose and another where you take a deep breath and slowly breath out then, when done, make a final exerted breath out. The latter one tends to make me laugh but that is good in itself :)
PS I have arthritis and find it hard to sit in one position for a time else I seize up and bits go dead then the dreaded pins and needles!

Took me a while to find a comfortable position for me, a cushion helped, just make sure your posture is good, sat up straight, shoulders dropped etc...
Will do jenna, it's great to see that all of these amazing health benefits can be ours through meditation.
It lowers oxygen consumption.
It decreases respiratory rate.
It increases blood flow and slows the heart rate.
Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients.
Leads to a deeper level of relaxation.
Good for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. to normal.
Reduces anxiety attacks by lowering the levels of blood lactate.
Decreases muscle tension (any pain due to tension) and headaches.
Builds self-confidence.
It increases serotonin production which influences mood and behaviour. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, obesity, insomnia and headaches.
Helps in chronic diseases like allergies , arthritis etc.
Reduces Pre- menstrual Syndrome.
Helps in post-operative healing.
Enhances the immune system. Research has revealed that meditation increases activity of 'natural-killer cells', which kill bacteria and cancer cells.
Also reduces activity of viruses and emotional distress.
didnt know I had PMS.....thanks. for letting me know that

Thanks to everyone. I'm definitely going to do this. I think I feel bette already just knowing that others are interested enough to answer me.
It always seems to come down to me to appear to p1ss on the parade, but I feel responsible to put yoga activities into perspective as a one sided view has been given.

Some yoga practitioners make outlandish claims about the physiological benefits of yoga, often without any scientific proof whatsoever.

But yoga is a good workout if you need to wind down, focus or improve your flexibility and balance.
Ignore this, as I pressed the wrong key....will follow up later.
I tried a yoga class once. I just couldn`t get into it. I sat on the floor and felt a complete prat when it got to the ommms. I thought, yes this might be great in Bangkok, but sitting doing omms in Teddington feels slightly ridiculous. I`m not sure those Eastern practices travel very well. You don`t have to practice yoga to meditate though. Any form on relaxation, if one can learn to relax, will have the same health benefits. That could be exercise, listening to music or anything else really.
This thread has a biased and one sided approach to Yoga and I would like to re-establish a realistic balance to the subject.

<<It lowers oxygen consumption.
It decreases respiratory rate.<<<

I have no argument with the above except to say that this is the case with any relaxing pastime...e.g watching TV or reading a book.

<<<It increases blood flow and slows the heart rate. <<<

How can the circulation, slow the heart rate but at the same time increase the blood flow?....this is physiologically impossible.

<<<Good for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. to normal<<

It may well lower the BP in people with hypertension, but certainly not back to normal and this fall in BP is only transient.......goes back to it´s high level again soon after ceasing the Yoga session.

>>>It increases serotonin production which influences mood and behaviour.<<<<<

I can find no studies that have measured the serotonin levels before and then after a Yoga session.

<<<<Helps in chronic diseases like allergies , arthritis etc.
Reduces Pre- menstrual Syndrome.<<<<

Again no reputable medical studies support these claims only reports from Yoga Associations which would hardly be "neutral" in their findings.

<<<Helps in post-operative healing.<<< Total nonsense with no medical support. Healing of what?

<<Enhances the immune system. Research has revealed that meditation increases activity of 'natural-killer cells', which kill bacteria and cancer cells.

237sj. if you only tried it once, then it wasn´t 4u.

No scientific studies at all to substantiate the above.

one thing I found was meditating lowers my heart rate quite a bit..(to between 35-40 bpm. (checked using a pulse oximeter) on a couple of occasions at work....also resp rate drops....I also do yoga at times as it seems to be less likely to cause joint pain.... and combined with swimming I feel better when I keep it up...
If you are going to go down the yoga path find a teacher you get on with...can take a few different tries
