Hi. I am going to buy a TV today, just a small one for my bedroom. However, the room doesn't have an aerial socket, so I'm just wondering how that will work for Freeview?
If someone could advise me on what I need to get/do, that would be great. TIA.

Unless you live pretty much underneath your local transmitter then you'll need to get an aerial socket linked to an external (or loft at a push) aerial put in the bedroom.

If you live within a couple of miles of your local transmitter then an internal aerial *may* be OK for you.
As (I assume) you are upstairs you should be ok. We use an indoor aerial wth our bedroom tv and it is fine. The only issue is that the optimum aerial position is very precise but once found there are no issues.

Downstairs with our kitchen tv a signal is received but intermittently.

We live a couple of miles away from our transmitter and qute low down.
We live about 30 miles from the Emily Moor transmitter and get freeview in the bedroom with a small internal aerial with a signal amplifier between the aerial and TV.
I tried it in my bedroom with an indoor aerial, even bought an aerial booster and no joy. Had to get a proper aerial socket in bedroom. Didn' ost too much - got a new rooftop aerial and 2 sockets - £67.
We use indoor aerials - cheap ones (£3), no signal booster. They work fine.
We live about 5 miles from the transmitter.
Graham-w.... there are 6 other transmitters within a 30 miles radius of the emley moor transmitter, if you are getting freeview on an internal antenna the chances are you are picking it up from one of the other 6 transmitters and not the emley moor one. (either that or you are very high up and have a uninterrupted line of sight to the transmitter)

Thank-you for your answers. I have just tried an internal aerial, but it was rubbish. The screen went 'blocky', if that makes sense, and it couldn't find the channel. It's found a couple of channels, but the picture quality is terrible.
I'm a bit gutted now, as I didn't really want to have to get anyone out to fix me up with one. Will have to though, as I can't watch this, it's awful!
Guess I'll be watching a dvd tonight :)

Thanks to all.
Chuck. I am near Selby, N. Yorks in a slightly elevated position. My aerial is pointing just south of west. I've always assumed that I was set up on Emily Moor transmitter. Am I wrong? Where else could my signal be coming from?
That sounds like you are on emley moor then! I am genuinely surprised you can get freeview with an internal antenna at that distance. You must be elevated enough to have a pretty much totally clear view to the transmitter. the link below will show you where the other transmitters are within the 30 mile range of emley moor and they are in all directions apart from yours :)

It's very flat across the vale of York.
This map shows my area and signal strength. http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=SE222128

Oh that's interesting. I just had a look on that link, and it says there's a transmitter just 2 miles from where I live. Strange that I can't get a signal then. Hmmm.
I now have someone coming out on Tuesday. Found a friend that will do it for £30, so can't complain :)
Thank-you.
I can clearly see Emley Moor, it's about 9 miles away, I manage to get Freeview on an aerial from the 99p shop.
pretty academic now as someones going to sort it, but you just get an old plastic salad bowl and line it with tinfoil. Make hole in the centre of the bowl and make sure some of the foil is going through to the underside of bowl........boombadaboom..a handy dandy nifty thrifty sat dish

Use a standard co-ax lead from the tv, and use the centre core of the cable (tape up the outer shield core), just attach it to the foil coming through hole in bowl, keep cable in place with some duct tape or similar and then position bowl to suit.
I think I saw one like that on Dr Who baz.
