mobile phones abroad

I haven't had a foreign holiday since before I had a mobile phone, so I know nothing at all about the best way to phone home from Germany next month. I'm on pay-as-you-go with Talk talk. Any useful tips?

Dont'...it is horrendously expensive on pay as you go. It is better to get to a computer and MSN chat or email....
