Budget £1000. Must be very economical, and cheap to insure. Must be basic, but power steering would be good. Not fussed about about leccy windows, air con etc.

Im assuming you want a small car?
Citroen C1
renault clio
ford fiesta
vauxhall corsa
a Citroen C1 for £1000 ?!?!

If you can find decent C1s at that price you'll make a fortune reselling them!
What ever you decide Mad, make sure you have someone with you that can check the car over otherwise it may cost you more than a £1000? Clutch, Cam Belt? disks+pads, engine wear. get the body work checked for serious damage, tyres out of track etc, just remember, you will not get much for the price you state unless the car is getting sold from an elderly person that has packed up driving.
go for something a bit bigger they don't hold their price so well so you get more for your money I sold a low mileage (61,000) astra 1600 automatic T reg a while ago for £550 it was a little cracker but everyone wants the little ones...
Yes when I was looking round for a motor for the trouble & strife I saw a nice 2000 Astra 1.4 on ebay. She dismissed it because it was the saloon and she wanted a hatchback. Pity because it went for £750 in the end. Bargain even if it needed a service and a couple of things doing.
