Dog collar

My 10 year old GSD suddenly appear to be irritated by her collar and is constantly scratching at it. I have checked and its not too tight but as soon as i take it off her the scratching stops. Any ideas what else it could be ? thanks Jasmin.

maybe if it's an old one it's beginning to fray or break down in some way - I'm sure you've checked that she has no irritation around the collar area that is rubbed by the collar - that would obviously cease when the collar was removed.

She doesnt appear to have any kind of any rash or broken skin where her collar has been, I will go and buy a new one and see if that makes a difference.

Hi bought the new collar but had to take it off again as she is now scratching like crazy. I have checked for fleas and there is no sign but put frontline on anyway just incase. She was wormed yesterday and now she is going mad with the itching . Going to ring vets in the morning and hopefully get an appointment.

Just to warn you jasmin, Frontline Spot On is now known not to work anymore as the fleas have become immune to it. Just google the question and see. I couldn't understand why my cat and my neighbour's dog were scratching all the time when they had both been FL'd and that's how we found out when I googled it. Ask your vet for a different flea treatment if it turns out that in fact your dog does have fleas.

Hi went to the vets today she found no fleas and no sign she had ever had them. Couldnt find any reason why she was scratching so much and said it could have just been an allergic reaction to something she had been in contact with. Told me to go and buy some Piriton tablets and give her two per day for the next week. I will let you know how she gets on .
