It takes a couple of days for the egg to travel down the fallopian tube which is where the egg and sperm should meet. To increase your chances you should have sex a day or two before you ovulate, and then every day(or night) for three days after. The ovulation predictor kits worked for me.
Good luck
I think the stats are a 'normal' couple (ie those with no problems) have a 20-30% chance every month of getting pregnant.
Ovulation predictor kits can work - they measure the hormone which reaches it's peak just before the egg is released so if you have sex when that says then you do increase your chances. They are though ridiculously expensive to be using every month (you can get cheaper versions on the net). Other ways of assessing fertile times do include temprature taking and looking at your cervical mucus - that tends to look like egg white during fertile times and even the position of your cervix, but I'm not too sure about that one.
Don't have sex everyday throughout the month as it takes the man a few days to build up sperm, but every 2-3 days so that the sperm is 'fresh' - quality reduces the longer is stays in. Also blokes should keep that 'vital' area cool.
It's always worth you both taking vitamin to improve your general body condition, as well as healthy eating, stopping smoking and cutting down on the alcohol.
Then do it as much as possible when you've spotted the fertile signs. Most importantly of all, don't let sex become a chore with baby making. Still keep it fun and don't let the pressure get to you.
Good luck!
Hi gingerflaps, lol sorry, your user name is great!!
I am 6months pregnant and beliveve I fell on using the ovulation test kit, Me and my partner had decided to try for a baby. So I we stopped using comdoms (as I was not on the pill and had not been for 3 years) i never kept record of when we did it etc, but I never fell for a few months, I then got the ovalation kit, it says to use it between every 11-14th after the First day of your period depending on your cycle, I did a few then when I was ovulating had sex, and was pregnant, I think they are great I was also a smoker and had smoked for 10 years I highly reconmend them. Good Luck!!
Try to chill out about it. Also, if you have only recently come off the pill, you might not be ovulating with very good eggs yet, it can take up to a year or 18 months to become pregnant after coming off the pill, sometimes longer.
I have 4 years in between my daughter and my son and my next daughter. i used no contraception and did not change my nocturnal behaviour. I then have 15 months and 17 months between the middle daughter, my next daugher, and my next daughter. Weird. No explanation there. Also, I was on 18 when I had my daughter and concieved my last daughter when I was 28 so my age does not tally either.
Just be patient. And have lots of fun.
