What is the name of this film?

american film:
one scene is a teacher( or possible retired police officer) in an american lecture theatre discussing crime to the students
another scene is where his takes his students on a field trip to the site where his wife (police officer) was killed
He recalls the event where him , his wife and their colleagues go to a farm to arrest the man of the house
Only the mother and son are in the house who have been told by the father to not let anyone in and protect the house, so the son comes out with a shot gun and starts firing killing the wife of the teacher (possible retired police officer)
Not sure if its related to CSI at all (as i was watching manhunter with william petersen in it, when the above scenes popped in my head)
