How do some dating sites manage to be free?

Following on from a recent enquiry, I've found no difference between expensive dating sites charging around £10 a week and absolutely free ones. Two questions, one is how do the free ones manage, and two, as they do and provide a good service, why do people ever pay at all? Surely everyone knows you don't have to pay?
