What does a Guarantor need to provide?

Me and my girlfriend are about to rent a flat and we need a guarantor, my dad said he will do it but is very skeptical of providing bank statements as proof of earnings as he doesn’t want them to have all of his bank details.
Can anyone tell me what information you a required by LAW, to give to the estate agent, as i’m sure the estate agent is asking for more than is required.

well he will have to prove that he can afford to take over your rent if you cant pay. he has to guarentee he can pay it.
A guarantor has to provide the same details as you provided in the first place for your checks that made them decide you needed a guarantor. they are essentially undergoing the same checks as you did.

On the guarantor form his account number is not compulsory however, he has to provide previous 6 months bank statements which does have it on.

Do they need the guarantors account number? as they can check your credit rating without this information.

No, they do not need his account number to run the credit check. Blank them out with a black marker pen.
Tell your father he doesn't need to worry about his bank details.
There will be no more information, apart from his address, as there is on his cheques.

Thanks for the help people, thats what we were planning on doing. My dad doesn't like anyone knowing more than they should about him and hates having to give his bank account details to anyone. Thanks again everyone.

So does your father never use cheques then, as his account number is on them?
There's nothing required by law, as you put it, that a guarantor must provide. This is a contract between two or more parties and you or your father must provide enough information to convince the landlord that you can afford the rent and other liabilities.

As a landlord I would get a credit check done on the tenant and also a reference from the employer and, if applicable, from a previous landlord. If a guarantor is required then then same checks would apply to him/her as well. Some landlords ask for bank statements as well.

Bank account numbers and sort codes are fairly irrelevant, both to the landlord and to anyone else. Blank them out on the statements if you wish but there's little point really. As has been said, they're printed on cheques etc anyway and are no use to anyone unless someone is paying money into your account. Perhaps he's more concerned about the personal information actually on the statements (incomings and outgoings) rather than his bank account details.
