How long does it take for an oil painting to dry?
9 Answers
I know it probably depends on the amount of thinners/oil used but what is generally the time scale for oils to dry? Thanks

In recent years, water soluble oil paint has come to prominence, to some extent replacing the usage of traditional oils. Water soluble paints contain an emulsifier which allows them to be thinned with water (rather than with paint thinner), and allows very fast drying times (1-3 days) when compared with traditional oils (1-3 weeks).
oil paintings dry from outside in, the surface may appear dry but underneath the paint is still soft. It usually takes up to six months before it is completely dry and only them can the picture be protected by varnish. We use "retouching varnish" which gives temporary protection to a new painting, without inhibiting the natural drying procedure.
I'm not sure. I bought an oil painting that had been in the shop for over a year according to the owner. She wrapped it up and I then kept it for another four months because it was a Christmas gift for my partner. The shop keeper had wrapped it in bubblewrap and brown paper. I didn't think anything of it because presumably she was the expert. When my OH opened it the painting had marks all over it from the bubble wrap and was completely ruined.
