A lighted taper ( i think thats what they were called).

If oxygen is present the flame will get bigger and flare up.

If carbon dioxide is present the flame will go out.

I think this is correct from what i remember at school many many years ago.

Dave.
hydrogen and lighted taper makes a squeaky pop if memory serves me right
It's not a lit taper for oxygen it's one that's been blown out and is glowing, when in the presence of pure oxygen it will relight.
hydrogen--use a lighted splint...a pop sound is heard
oxygen-- use a glowing splint...oxygen will relight the splint
carbon dioxide--use lime water (calcium hydroxide)...it will turn cloudy or milky

(all nicked from another site)
Good answers.
Research wasn't this easy when I was a student.
I did say i was school a long time ago.

Dave.
As others have said
pure oxygen will reignite a glowing taper
Carbon Dioxide will put out a lit taper
The definitive test for Carbon Dioxide is lime water. A lighted splint being extinguished cannot distinguish between CO2, Nitrogen or any of the inert gases amongst others.
