Sister's HTC Desire Phone

This phone is making me tear my hair out. I'm trying to upload her photos for her on to my laptop, (to start with). My laptop is recognising that an Android Phone is there via an USB but it can't find the Driver.
I tried to download a Driver but it didn't work. Help!! This really is the most annoying and complicated phone to use, or am I missing something?

Once you have connected the phone to the PC, the phone should then tell you it’s connected and ask if you want it to act as a drive on the PC. You must say yes to this first (on the phone) before the PC will be able to see any files.
If nothing happens on the phone, look in the notification bar at the very top of the phone and drag this down if necessary.
I haven’t got the same phone but I have got another android phone so I assume it’s the same.

Oh right Hammer. I didn't know you could drag the top bar down. My pc was recognising that the phone was there but the phone did nothing. My sister is coming back next week so I'll have another go. She told me it didn't come with a disc.
