racism and homophobia
Reluctance of existing staff to accept 'more diverse' newcomers.
Reluctance of more diverseoutsiders to join the company.
Takes time.
Recruitment/promotion policies may contain hidden bias.
the folk who apply for the jobs, who want to do what ebe=ver it is you are offering...you cant FORCE people to apply...
qualifications required...if all the folk who have them are able bodied white males.....

1. The demographics of the local community.
For example, I live in a small town of around 5,000 people which has some large employers (including national and international firms) represented on the big trading estate on the edge of town. The bosses of those companies (who might be located hundred or thousands of miles from here, in very different communities) might aim to see 'non-white' employees well-represented in their workforce. However, given that there are only a handful people of Asian or African origin around here (and in neighbouring towns as well), it's almost inevitable that the majority of businesses on the trading estate will have an 'all white' workforce ;

2. Difficulties in monitoring the diversity (or lack of it) within the workplace. An employer can quickly see how many 'non-white' employees he has, simply by walking around the shop floor (and, hopefully, by checking that there's similar representation at management level and in the boardroom). But he can't know how many gay employees he has working for him unless he asks intrusive personal questions.

Having sufficient provision to be able to respect particular religious or cultural requirements such as ramadam as much as possible.

Some organisations may have a reputation for being intolerant to certain groups such as the armed forces.
<<describe two difficulties that some organisations face in ensuring a diverse workplace>> They ensure a diverse workplace by employing a diverse workforce. That is fairly self-explanitory isn`t it?
Not being able to hire people purely on merit/experience/suitability, but having to factor in race/disability/sexuality etc.
Positive discrimination - not being able to recruit the white middle class single man because he does not tick any of the ' special' boxes.
Its difficult to maintin a diverse workforce when your potential employees are all similar. Quite often the work attracts one gender or one age group over another or as Chris has said, the demographics dictate the background of the majority of the applicants.

Another difficullty is that a successful company had low staff turnover and promotes talented people from within. If this pool of people are similar and few vacancies arise, its difficult to ensure divrsity.

Prejudices and pre-conceived perceptions are an obvious dificulty but this is becoming slightly less prevalent amongst those involved in recruitment.
