For example, Robbie Williams used to work with Guy Chambers, Madonna and William Orbit/Mirwais/whoever. It's just that she wouldn't release her stuff as 'William Orbit featuring Madonna, some guitarist, etc.
Futhermore, the point about appealing to more fans is true, but also, hip-hop arose from MCs just rapping together with their backing (I know it's much more than this but I'm making a point), and so you get featured artists coming together to give their two cents (or 50 cents!).
