I need to know what travel insurance to get, and whether my EHIC card is of any use.

Ok so leave it at home if you've over packed, and just hope you don't end up being taken ill mid-flight and diverted to a European airport , but that's just me, I always leave my will with my son when I fly anywhere

just found this on the Post Office site, if anyone is interested..
"Which countries am I covered for?
When you get a quote for your travel insurance you’ll need to select the area for the country or counties you intend to holiday in. This will mean you’re only paying for the cover you need.

The areas are:

UK –includes England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands
Europe -encompasses all European Union countries including Iceland, Ireland, some former Soviet Union countries, islands in the Mediterranean, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Madeira, the Azores, and the Canary Islands"

so Turkey is in Europe, for Post Office insurance purposes!

Bear in mind that even if you are travelling to a country where your E111 (or more accurately, your European Health Insurance Card) is valid you still need to take out travel insurance. The Health card only covers emergency treatment and insurance cover is still needed to cover most of the things you are likely to need such as ongoing medical treatment, repatriation and cancellation cover.

Sara, you might well find that travel cover does include countries bordering the Med even though they are not in Europe - we didn't need extra cover on our policy when we went to Morocco last year, we were covered by the European policy - but I checked specifically with them first.

get an EHIC anyway as it's valid for a few years so will do for future trips, and if you have to claim your insurance company may well ask if you have one (even though you can't use it in Turkey).

There is a bit of confusion around the 'Euro' cover - I work for the post office and we cover egypt and turkey as european cover, although this will change on the 15th July and we'll be classing them both as worldwide after that along with many other insurers.

I work in a Post Office and can tell you that as from this Friday Turkey and Egypt will no longer be in Europe for travel insurances purposes, they are being moved to worldwide. Buy your travel insurance from the Post Office tomorrow or Thursday, you'll get it cheaper than if you buy it on Friday!

a lot of EHICs are running out this year - they were the ones taken out when the cards were introduced five years ago. So make sure yours is up to date.

You'll love Dalyan, I go every year (going in september). For travel insurance purposes, it is outside Europe. Insurance usually costs about £15. Don't forget your £10 note for your Visa entry.

I haven't been for a few years so not sure what changes may have been made (perhaps a few more roads have been surfaced!), but really looking forward to it.

I've looked into the travel insurance and some companies include Turkey in their European policies. Barclays and VirginMoney definitely do, and they were less than half the price of the Post Office policies.

sara please be careful and read the small print - I saw something on the BBc news the other week talking about how some travel policies, particularly those bought on the net, are applying excesses to each item individually so say for example you had £100 excess on you baggage. The would count each particular item e.g. camera, cash, clothes etc separately and apply the excess to each, making the policy virtually useless. I am sure that a proper respectable place wouldn't do this, but better safe than sorry :o)

Boxtops - sorry, I'm not sure about Morocco, and I'm not in work tomorrow (my day off - whoop!). There's nothing stopping you buying travel insurance at the Post Office tomorrow though. I bought mine in January, before the prices went up, and I'm not going on holiday until next month. In fact, if you buy before Friday you will be covered for ash clouds, that's one thing that won't be covered from Friday onwards.

I think the Post Office was there when I last went, and the square looks empty (apart from the lone dog!). will look forward to seeing it again. we're going in about 4 weeks.
