Who ever uses the expression "stoned" to mean "intoxicated" ?
Anyone ?
There's a clue in today's crossword ...
10(A). Severely punished for being drunk (6)
I'm guessing the answer is "STONED", but seriously ...
... you'd only say someone was "stoned" if they'd taken some other drugs, surely ?
Presumably, "RATTED" doesn't work, because it's not a punishment ... except in the book "1984" when the Thought Police have the cage with the rats in it.
I grew up when 'stoned' meant 'drunk' and drugs weren't spoken about. I must admit I still think of it as meaning 'drunk', depending on the circumstances.
actually, as I recall, stoned just used to apply to marijuana; it didn't apply to cocaine, LSD etc. This may well have changed; there's a whole new world of drugs since my day.
