Over pruned Hydrangea

I pruned it right back to the first leaf shoots at the end of March. Its has grown back quite well and the leaves are abundant but there is only one flower head on!
Will it flower again more profusely next year and will I need to prune again next spring?

prune a little less vigorously unless you are desperate for the plant to stay a certain size th best flowering plants you see tend to be pretty big

when did you dead head last year? if you do this too early you wouln't get get flowers this year anyway.

I waited till all the frost was over and left it until the end of March
My fingers were itching to prune but I was advised to leave it

no worries ric.ror - I just remember being told by pro gardener not to dead head hydrangeas as it would stop them flowering the following year. As the name suggests (hydra) they need lots of water.

I have been very good re the watering
I just think I better leave well alone for a while and see if it flowers next year

One of my hydrangeas was caught out by the frost which more or less sent it back to ground level. Just leaves this year, but (unless frost attack again) it will flower next.

So leave yours this year completely and then follow clanad's advice.
