I am decorating my kitchen and would like to do a mottled affect on the main wall how and where do I start to achieve this look?

You could try a stencil and stencil brush, looks like a stunted shaving brush, or you could 'rag rub' the wet paint with some paint of a different colour. Or you could use a 'dry roller' which is a roller that is dipped in paint and rolled out 'dry' in a paint tray; it isn't actually dry but holding a minimal amount of the contrast colour. Anyways, it's an art to practice, good results don't come immediately. :-)
Try visiting B & Q, or your local decorators merchant. They will have a variety of free leaflets on how to achieve many different finishes.
