Many thanks to you all. Believe it or not, I had unit and sleigh on my list of probables but couldn't quite fit them to the clues. All is now clear!!! Mind you, there are a few answers in this crossword that I still can't understand even though they must be right; including "anglers thumb". Many thanks again.
Hi dunb' - been away from PC, so missed your reply.

Sorry to tell you that it's not 'Angler's thumb'...

31d Miller's thumb (fish) - 'thumb' (under) 'milers' (crossing) l(ine)

Yes, I realised "anglers thumb" was wrong when I inserted "unit". I got in such a mess with that clue (and others!) that I took "fish" as angle, rs as runners (why? I hear you ask!!) and "thumb" as finger. To make matters worse I googled to a site entitled "anglers thumb" and, although it bore no resemblance to the clue, desperation set in! I actually thought I had cracked it by default!! Just another bad day at the office!! Many thanks once again.
You were right about 22d. Ever heard of 'blue funk'?
22d Blue funk (fuel in bunk, scrambled)
34ac Unit: unit = one; can = tin; start to unfasten = u, gives tinu; wheels means turn it round.
31d: millers thumb, alt name for a small fish (aka bullhead). finger = thumb; trampled on = below; runners = milers; crossing line = millers.
24ac: Got _L_I_H. All I can think of is SLEIGH, but can't match it to the clue.
SLEIGH was explained above by Boxtops
