Rumour has it that he played the song live at a 70's gig and somebody then committed suicide. He never played it again.
May I also suggest the latter parts of 2 David Bowie CD's "Low" and "Heroes". They are the 'experimantal' stuff he did with Brian eno in the 70's. Creepy, moody, sad but quite beautiful.
Further Bowie collaborated with eno again in the brilliant 1995 "1 Outside". Its an album about murder for arts sake being investigated by a wannabe sadist detective. Amazing. "Hearts Filthy Lesson" (song 3) closed the movie 'Se7en'.
More recently try listening to Lou Reed's "The Raven". Get the extended 2cd version. Its a dark tale built around the life of Edgar A Poe. Lots of moody talk with Reed's NYC accent as dark as ever. sublime
The Only Ones (album also called The Only Ones). Fantastically depressing. I can't find any online samplers other than on itunes. Especially wrist-slashing are Breaking Down, The Beast, It's the Truth and No Peace for the Wicked. The others ain't too jolly neither. Still some of my favourite tracks 27 years on.
This may not be as dark and depressing as you are looking for, but Portishead have some fantastic miserable moments. One of my all time fave songs is 'Roads'. Gives me a hairs-on-back-of-neck feeling!
I'm totally with you on the depressing NOT being depressing though. I find Radiohead/Smiths/Portishead/etc... extremely UPlifting. Dark music is so interesting and, being a musician myself, I am astounded at how anyone can write stuff like that. Believe me, I've tried! And I just can't do it!
